Distinguished Alumni Dinner: Peter Benedek
Peter Benedek is a Founding Partner and Board Member of United Talent Agency, internationally recognized as one of the world’s leading talent and literary agencies.
As a primary architect of UTA’s formation and growth, Benedek has presided over the rapid expansion of the agency from industry upstart in 1991 to one of today’s premier global talent and literary agencies. Collectively, UTA’s more than 100 agents represent a significant cross-section of Academy, Emmy, Grammy, Screen Actors Guild, Directors Guild, Writers Guild, Producers Guild and Golden Globe awards winners and nominees. UTA’s deep roster of clients also includes globally recognized artists and filmmakers such as Johnny Depp, Harrison Ford, Gwyneth Paltrow, Owen Wilson, Seth Rogen, Anthony Hopkins, Jennifer Lopez, Angelina Jolie among numerous others.
Benedek is known industry-wide as one of entertainment’s top dealmakers, and was the agent behind the creation of the LAW & ORDER franchise—one of television’s biggest brands, as well as the packaging of client David Chase’s groundbreaking series THE SOPRANOS, considered to be the most significant series in the modern era. The agency also is responsible for packaging and/or representing key elements of many other critically acclaimed television series, including, CSI, CSI: MIAMI, CSI: NY, SIX FEET UNDER, GREY’S ANATOMY, HOUSE, TRUE BLOOD, HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER, TWO AND A HALF MEN, CRIMINAL MINDS, MEDIUM, among numerous others.
Benedek earned undergraduate degrees from the University of Michigan and the London School of Economics. He earned his law degree from Columbia Law School, where he graduated with distinction in 1973. He began practicing law at the Beverly Hills law firm of Kaplan, Livingston, Goodwin, Berkowitz & Selvin, and was named a Partner in 1979. In 1981, he left to found the law firm of Weissman, Wolff, Bergman, Coleman & Schulman. In 1984, he left the practice of law to form the Bauer-Benedek Agency, which in 1991 merged with Leading Artists Agency to form United Talent Agency. In 1998, Benedek received the Arthur B. Krim Award from Columbia Law School in recognition of his outstanding achievement in the entertainment industry.
